Low turnout predicted for todays primary

Alabama election officials are expecting more than 700,000 voters to turn out for todays primary election. Secretary of State Jim Bennett is predicting that 25 to 27 percent of Alabama's 2.8 million registered voters will turn out today. That prediction is down 32 percent from four years ago. This is the first election where all voters will be required to show a photo ID. Forms of acceptable identification include a driver's license, non-driver ID, Alabama voter ID or passport. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Races not decided in todays primary will advance to a runoff July 15.

Gadsden police report new phone scam

Gadsden Police are receiving reports of a new telephone scam. They said that someone from a 202 area code,  which is Washington DC, is claiming to be from the IRS and directing the targets of the scam to go to the nearest store that sells Visa or Master Card Green Dot cards and purchase a certain amount.  They tell them to call back and give the card number. The callers are telling people that this is to cover outstanding taxes that they owe, and if the targeted person does not comply within 30 minutes, a Gadsden police officer will come to their house and arrest them.  The Gadsden Police Department has not had any reports of anyone losing any money at this time.   But, if you get a call directing you to purchase a Green Dot Master Card or Visa, you should report this to your local law enforcement agency.

Anniston council discusses incentives proposal

The Anniston City Council Monday discussed creating a standardized process for offering incentives to potential businesses in the city. The proposed policy is the latest in the city's efforts to fill up vacant storefronts in the downtown area.  City Manager Brian Johnson said he will bring the incentives proposal before the council for a vote during its regular meeting Monday.  Johnson said the incentive plan officially lays out what the city would offer a prospective business.  Specifically, the incentives package would offer to abate city sales tax and property tax to a new business in the form of a rebate for a period of five years.  The city is also currently attempting to hire an in-house economic developer who will focus his or her efforts on retail growth in Anniston. The city a few weeks ago opened its new Planning and Development Services Department at City Hall, a one-stop shop that streamlines services for residents and business developers — from issuing business licenses to providing building inspections.

Talladega man arrested on assault charges

Damian Jovaughn Curry
A Talladega man has been charged with felony assault and escape in the third degree, as well as several misdemeanor charges, following an incident in the Mapco parking lot on Alabama 77 Friday evening.  According to Talladega Police , 27 year old  Damien Jovaughn Curry, is being held on a $20,000 bond set by Circuit Judge Bo Hollingsworth.  Curry was first observed by officers responding to a disturbance call. Curry was on the trespass list for the Mapco station, and apparently had a crack pipe underneath his hat. He was handcuffed and taken into custody.  Curry said a female had given him the pipe to hold, and she had the actual drugs. Officers were questioning the female when Curry managed to escape from the back of the patrol car and run off toward Wren Manor across the street, while still handcuffed.  Officers gave chase, and one of them was struck in the knee, head and chest with the handcuffs. Another officer injured his hand while taking Curry down.  Both officers were transported to the emergency room at Citizens Baptist Medical Center, where they were treated and released.  Curry was charged with criminal trespass, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana in the second degree, escape in the third degree and assault in the second degree against a police officer.
