Gadsden police report new phone scam

Gadsden Police are receiving reports of a new telephone scam. They said that someone from a 202 area code,  which is Washington DC, is claiming to be from the IRS and directing the targets of the scam to go to the nearest store that sells Visa or Master Card Green Dot cards and purchase a certain amount.  They tell them to call back and give the card number. The callers are telling people that this is to cover outstanding taxes that they owe, and if the targeted person does not comply within 30 minutes, a Gadsden police officer will come to their house and arrest them.  The Gadsden Police Department has not had any reports of anyone losing any money at this time.   But, if you get a call directing you to purchase a Green Dot Master Card or Visa, you should report this to your local law enforcement agency.
