Ashville mayor lashes out against his opponent in house race

Mack Butler

Ashville Mayor Robert McKay lashed out against his political opponent after losing to Mack Butler in the race for the State House of Representatives District 30 seat, saying Butler “got a lot of money out of Montgomery and made me look like a bad person. McKay lashed out in a gathering of St. Clair County mayors last week, calling the Republican nominee for the seat “a terrible individual.”  Butler received 59 percent of the vote, to McKay’s 41 percent in St. Clair and Etowah counties.  McKay told the mayors gathered for the St. Clair County Mayors Association breakfast. “It is obvious I have more friends in Etowah County than I do here..”  McKay said Butler spent $332,000 on the campaign, while he spent $17,000.  He said his family suffered from the negative campaign.  McKay said he  will never run in a statewide campaign, saying he was not going to be in anybody’s pocket in Montgomery, and that’s the reason he didn’t win the job. He said his  only prayer is that Mack Butler gets indicted because he is a terrible individual.”  Butler has said he has done nothing to be indicted for.
