Glencoe man Surrenders to police after Thursday night search

A Glencoe man who was the subject of a Thursday night search turned himself in to Glencoe Police shortly before noon Friday.

Glencoe police became involved Thursday afternoon when a Glencoe woman came in to report her husband for menacing in relation to his actions early Thursday morning as she was heading to work. She told police she came out and her husband was standing with the trunk of the car open. When she asked why he had the trunk open, he reached inside the car for a gun.

She got into her vehicle and went to work, then stopped at the police department on her way home. After making the report, she told police she was going to get a protection order against her husband.

At about 7:30 p.m., Police said she was home and opened the door to let the dog out and her husband came inside, bearing a rifle, dressed in camouflage clothing. She called police,  and her husband continued to make threatening remarks even while she was on the phone with authorities. Police responded, and the woman told them her husband had fled into the treeline.

Glencoe officers started to search for him and called in the Joint Special Operations Group to assist in establishing a perimeter and conducting the search. JSOG notified the Department of Public Safety, and a helicopter flew over, also looking for the suspect.

The suspect was not found overnight. officers were able to get the woman to a safe location for the night, and went back to the home Friday morning to clear the residence so she could return there. At the residence,  they determined the man had gotten back in the house at some point and got a cellphone.  The man had used the cellphone to call his father to bring him something to eat . Police talked with the father, and he talked to his son. Ultimately, the man surrendered without further incident and was taken to the Etowah County Detention Center.

the man will be charged with two misdemeanor counts of menacing-domestic violence in connection with the incidents Thursday morning and Thursday evening involving his wife.

Sheriff issues warning to convenience store owners about illegal gambling machines

Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin is warning local convenience stores that having gambling devices inside of their business is illegal.

The sheriff's office is asking business owners to have the machines removed before next week or face arrests. They say individuals who are caught with the machines could face misdemeanor charges of possession of a gambling device or promoting gambling.

The sheriff's office says it has worked with other state law enforcement agencies to enforce Alabama laws that make electronic gambling devices illegal.

Business owners with questions about possible illegal machines inside their business are encouraged to call the Etowah County Sheriff's Office at 256-546-2825 to have them inspected.

The sheriff's office says an investigation is ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Anniston receives Grant for Farmers Market

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded A $90,630 grant to the city of Anniston to enlarge and support its farmers market. City officials say an expanded market would help improve the health of residents while furthering plans to turn Anniston into a recreational tourism hub.

The grant will provide the city money for the farmers market during the next two years. Officials say the grant will be used mainly for infrastructure improvements, such as for a 40-by-120-foot tent to provide shade for farmers and residents as they look at produce.

The money will also be used to purchase more tables, chairs, signs, marketing materials and scanners that can accept cards through the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

 The city opened the market for the first time in June in the parking lot of the Cheaha Brewing Company; nearby Zinn Park had been its previous location. The market remained open for 14 weeks and received more than 5,000 visitors before closing for the year.

Don Wambles, director of the Farmers Market Authority, said Anniston is poised to expand its farmers market. The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries established the Farmers Market Authority to assist with the creation and development of farmers markets in the state.

Communities selected for Etowah Storm Shelters

The Gadsden-Etowah County Emergency Management Agency received more applications for community storm shelters than there was money to fund. Using criteria based on state recommendations, EMA this week pared the list to  eight shelters the $619,000 grant will fund.

EMA director Mike Bryant said local governments and fire departments submitted letters of intent totaling $2.9 million.

Bryant said EMA also received requests for funding for generators.

Bryant said the area with the most need for a shelter was New Union Fire Department, followed by Walnut Grove community, Egypt Volunteer Fire Department, Sand Valley Volunteer Fire Department and Altoona.

Mountainboro Volunteer Fire Department and two shelters in Gadsden — one in the Walnut Park/Mill Village area and another in Green Pastures — were the other applications approved.  An application for those projects must be filed by Jan. 31 with the state EMA.

15 Area Teams Headed into High School Football Playoffs

15  area  High School Football teams officially are playoff bound after the Alabama High School Athletic Association released the first-round pairings late Friday night.

Class 7A, Region 4 champion Gadsden City will get a rematch with Hewitt-Trussville for its first-round opponent. Southside, the 6A, Region 7 winner, will host Pinson Valley, and Etowah will travel to face 5A, Region 6 runner-up Mortimer Jordan. Undefeated Glencoe, the 3A, Region 6 winner, will host Sylvania, and Sardis will travel to face 4A, Region 7 champion Oneonta. Class 2A, Region 7 runner-up Gaston will host Cold Springs.

In 1A, Spring Garden will host Marion County. Another undefeated team, Fyffe, the 2A, Region 7 winner, will host Tarrant. Two 3A area teams on Sand Mountain begin the playoffs at home with Plainview hosting Weaver and Geraldine welcoming Walter Wellborn.

Boaz will travel to face 5A, Region 6 champion Lincoln, while 6A, Region 7 runner-up Fort Payne will host Gardendale, a team they lost to 41-7 on the road earlier in the season.
