The Board of Directors of The Chamber of Gadsden &
Etowah County formally endorsed a referendum on Sunday liquor sales for the
city of Gadsden thursday. Chamber
officials say an economic impact of Sunday sales has been commissioned. Chamber officials say they took the action
after Sen. Phil Williams, of Rainbow
City, said earlier this week that an economic impact study and a request for a
referendum by The Chamber, the Gadsden Commercial Development Authority and
elected officials, including the Gadsden City Council and the Etowah County
Commission, would have to be done before
he would consider supporting legislation allowing a vote. The resolution states that citizens of the City of Gadsden should
be granted the right to vote as they deem appropriate on a local act or general
act of local application regarding the issue of seven-day sales of
alcohol. The resolution did not endorse
Sunday sales but said it should be left up to citizens to vote as their deem
appropriate on the community issue.
