Woman charged with letting pet pigs run loose

A Calhoun county woman is facing a misdemeanor charge for letting her pot-bellied pigs loose in the neighborhood.  37 year old April Woodrum, of Wellington had a warrant filed against her in Calhoun County District Court last week for permitting livestock to run at large, which is a class C misdemeanor. The warrant was signed by the womans Neighbor Jimmy Nelson.  Nelson told the Sheriff’s Office that four pigs had been roaming his yard and had even caused damage to his property.  Under Alabama law it is illegal “to permit livestock to run at large in a quarantined district without a written permit of the State Veterinarian or a commissioned livestock inspector.” The law applies to people who keep livestock animals as pets, as opposed to commercial farmers.  Woodrum was released from the Calhoun County Jail on a $300 bond.   A conviction on the charge carries a jail sentence of up to 30 days. Officials say if she is convicted, Woodrum would likely only receive a suspended sentence.
