Man in serious condition after jumping from bridge

A 26-year-old man is in serious condition at UAB Hospital after jumping off a bridge Wednesday in Gadsden.
According to Gadsden police , the man was driving a blue Honda Odyssey on Forrest Avenue about 1:50 p.m. when the van ran off the roadway on the east side of the bridge. Witnesses said he returned to the bridge and jumped off. When officers and medics reached the suspect he didn’t respond to their questions, but mumbled repetitive phrases in Spanish, such as “My God, Holy Spirit, it is the end of the world.”
He was taken by ambulance to the hospital landing zone and airlifted to UAB.
Officers talked to family members who said he’d been acting strangely for the past couple of days, praying more than usual and mumbling odd phrases like those officers heard at the scene.
