Drowning at Camp Sumatanga

A 911 call was placed on Wednesday for a possible drowning at Sumatanga Camp and Conference Center during an Adult Special Camp designed for adults with intellectual and cognitive disabilities according to a press release from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.  According to the camp, there were five lifeguards and two licensed practical nurses on duty. One of the lifeguards noticed 40-year-old James Michael Grissom face down in the pool.  911 was called immediately. St. Clair County deputies were dispatched along with Gallant Volunteer Fire Department and AMED.  When deputies arrived on the scene, CPR was being administered. AMED transported Grissom to St. Vincent’s East Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The incident is currently under investigation by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division.
