A 40-year-old Altoona man who allegedly barricaded himself
in a shed on his property and repeatedly fired a weapon at law enforcement
officers is in custody. The Alabama Law
Enforcement Agencies Aviation Unit and
Tactical Team received a call for assistance about 9 p.m. Sunday from the
Blount County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect, whose identity wasn’t released, is in the
Blount County Jail. No additional information is available as the investigation
is ongoing.
A six hour stand-off in Blount County Sunday night sent one
man to jail and left dozens of neighbors on edge.
40 year old Richard Clark is now in the Blount County Jail
facing charges that could range from attempted murder of law enforcement to
kidnapping.
The Blount County Sheriff’s Office responded to the house
off Ballard Road in Susan Moore shortly after 7:30 Sunday night. The ALEA
Tactical team arrived shortly after.
Investigators say Clark fired many shots at deputies. Nobody
was injured.
Witnesses say at least thirty rounds were fired through the
night. The Sheriff’s Office says Clark also shot at the state’s helicopter
flying over the house.
Clark’s brother in law, John Adkins said he and a female
family member were kept inside the house for two hours. Adkins says Clark
eventually let the woman leave, and then he escaped shortly after.
It would be hours of gun shots later before tear gas was
thrown into the house and Clark surrendered.
The sheriff's office expects formal charges Tuesday morning.
It is still unclear what sparked the stand-off.
Adkins said alcohol and pills were involved.
