Workers at a Piedmont automotive components manufacturing
plant have voted to join a union.
Employees at the Commercial Vehicle Group Inc. plant in Piedmont voted
Wednesday to join the United Auto Workers. The plant produces seats for large
commercial trucks. In a release, workers said they voted 89-45 to join UAW
because they're faced with wage caps, growing use of temp workers who receive
no benefits, unaffordable health care and more.
CVG. Inc. officials were not immediately available for comment. National Employment Law Project Executive
Director Christine Owens says temp workers and wage stagnation is common in
manufacturing, but appears more pronounced in the South as more auto parts
suppliers open plants in the region. UAW has had limited success in
establishing a presence at Southern auto plants.
