The former chairman of the Cherokee County Republican Party
pleaded guilty Monday to charges of trafficking cannabis.
53 year old John Lloyd Ellis was arrested last July during a
county wide sweep after authorities said they found about a dozen marijuana
plants at his Ellisville home. Alabama Bureau of Investigation helicopter
spotters assisted in the operation, with officers working in teams to find
locate marijuana plants throughout Cherokee County.
Ellis, who was an adjunct professor of political science at
Jacksonville State University, resigned both his teaching and political posts
immediately after his arrest.
According to court documents, charges of first degree
marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia were dropped. Ellis
agreed to pay a fine of $25,000 and court costs.
Ellis also applied for probation. He is scheduled for
sentencing in November.
