Jacksonville State University officials cautioned students
and faculty about a verbal threat from an out-of-state individual directed at a
couple of individuals on campus for Homecoming weekend, but want to assure the
public that it was not a threat against the university.
JSU Public Relations Director Buffy Lockette
said the University Police Department received a report from individuals about
threats made against them by another individual as a result of a domestic
relationship.
“They were frightened,”
Lockette said, and turned to the police. The subject who made the threat is not
affiliated with the college and is not a student.
According to JSU’s notification, university
police worked with out-of-state law enforcement officers in evaluating the
threat, and the subject alleged to have made the threat has been arrested.
Lockette said the individual was charged with
making a terroristic threat, even though the threat was against specific people.
The subject has been freed on bond.
In the meantime, the university, in
accordance with the Clery Act, which establishes a procedure for college
campuses to provide timely notification, alerted students to the threat.
