Burglary suspect will not face federal charges for pipe bomb

Johnny Wade Stevens

Authorities say An Anniston man arrested in January on burglary charges will only face a state charge and no federal charges related to a pipe bomb police found in his truck.  34-year-old Johnny Wade Stevens was arrested by Oxford Police Jan. 17 after they responded to a report of attempted burglary on Burtram Drive in Eastaboga.  Stevens was pulled over less than a mile from the scene and polie discovered a pipe bomb in his truck.  Officials with the federal bureau of alcohol tobacco and firearms said Monday that Stevens will not be charged with federal crimes involving the pipe bomb or involving possible bomb-making materials later found in his home. Stevens remains in the Calhoun County Jail on Monday under a $100,000 cash bond, charged with three counts of burglary as well as possession of methamphetamines and possession of a destructive device.  Investigators say they do not believe Stevens intended to use the bomb against another person, and have no indication he is affiliated with a violent organization.
