Joyce Garrard |
An Etowah County woman wants to know how she’ll be executed
if she’s convicted of capital murder.
Joyce Garrard is behind bars for allegedly causing her 9-year-old
granddaughter Savannah’s death by forcing her to run until she collapsed. Attorneys for Garrard filed a motion with the
Etowah County Circuit Court Thursday requesting the protocol for method of
execution. They argue because Alabama currently does not have enough of one of
the three drugs used in lethal injections, an attempt to substitute or use
unregulated drugs could result in a prisoner being killed without
anesthesia. Attorneys also argue failure
to disclose the information is an infringement on Garrard’s right to due
process. Garrard is scheduled to be in court today on a motion her attorneys
filed in mid-March. They say Judge Billy
Ogletree should remove himself from the murder case because he has a history
with the family. Garrard’s trial is set to begin in June.
