Despite facing a budget shortfall, the Jacksonville State
University board of trustees voted unanimously Monday to keep tuition rates
level in 2014-15. Board members said
they decided to keep funding level to hold true to a commitment to students
that they would not increase tuition unless JSU lost state funding. The board's
decision marks the second year in a row that the institution has kept tuition
rates level for graduate students, the board’s decision follows a round of
annual tuition hikes for undergraduates that began in 2008 as the recession
settled in and state funding began to dwindle. JSU undergraduate students will
pay $6,792 a year to take 12 credit hours for two semesters — about four
classes per semester — next year. Graduate students will pay $6,282 for nine
hours, about three classes per semester, for the year. Students also now must pay a $150 student
fee, which was added last year.
