Environmental Waste Service of Alabama Inc. has been granted
a 10-year extension of its Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 Part
B permit by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Alabama Department
of Environmental Management.
The action will allow EWS Alabama to continue to manage
hazardous waste at its 40-acre facility on Webster’s Chapel Road in Glencoe,
just outside of Gadsden.
Company officials said the extension of the permit, which
includes more than 500 sheets of paper and governs all EWS Alabama’s technical
activities, took a nearly two-year process to obtain and was a significant
accomplishment for a company with less than 70 employees.
EWS Alabama purchased the Glencoe facility in 2006. Its
fleet of trucks serves customers in 14 states within a 500-mile radius. In
addition to its traditional disposal activities of hazardous and non-hazardous
waste, EWS Alabama is adding new services such as fuel blending,
stabilization/neutralization and lab packs.
