Oxford police say they prevented a Talladega County woman
from hanging herself in the city jail Friday evening.
According to Chief Bill Partridge the 26-year-old woman was
back at home after being released from Regional Medical Center on Sunday.
Partridge said the woman was arrested Friday after
shoplifting at a local business and charged with second-degree theft, resisting
arrest, assaulting a police officer and interfering with government operations.
"She was booked into the city jail ... and then they
caught her trying to hang herself.
Partridge said the woman was immediately sent to RMC for
treatment.
Partridge said the State Bureau of Investigation was called
in to investigate the incident, as they would be for any suicide or suicide
attempt at the jail. Partridge said all of the department's jailing procedures
were followed correctly in regards to the attempted suicide.
