Jury expected to begin deliberations today in Garrard Murder Trial

Joyce Hardin Garrard

Jurors are expected to begin deliberations today in the Etowah County capital murder trial of Joyce Hardin Garrard. Closing arguments in the case are set to begin today.
Prosecutors will argue that Garrard forced her granddaughter, Savannah Hardin, to run for hours, carrying wood, as punishment for lying about eating candy, until the girl collapsed, suffered a seizure and later died.
Defense attorneys are expected to argue the state is wrong about what led to the girl’s death — that she had too much water, causing low sodium that led to her seizure, not too little.
After testimony ended Wednesday, attorneys worked with Etowah County Circuit Judge Billy Ogletree to prepare the jury charges, instructions the judge will give jurors as they deliberate a verdict.
