Substitute school nurse arrested on drug charges

Brandi Leigh Butler

A former substitute nurse at Munford Middle and High schools has been arrested on multiple felony drug charges.
38 year old Brandi Leigh Butler, of Lincoln, was arrested last week on nine counts of receiving amphetamines and one count of possession of oxycodone. Bond was set at $25,000 on each charge by District Court Judge Jeb Fannin.
According to Talladega County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force Cmdr. Jason Murray, agents were contacted by school officials Wednesday. Task Force agents picked her up at the school and interviewed her at their headquarters in Talladega before charging her.
According to Talladega County District Attorney Steve Giddens, the receiving charges against Butler are related to her substitute position at Munford, and that the amphetamines involved were intended for legitimate uses by students. The possession charge is not related to her work with the school system, however.
Amphetamines are commonly used to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders in young people and teenagers.
Talladega County Schools Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Lacey said Butler had been removed from the list of available substitutes and would not be doing any more work for the system. Lacey said she believed Butler had been on the substitute list since fall.
