Piedmont Police Chief resigns

Citing both health and personal reasons,Piedmont police Chief Steven Tidwell announced his resignation Wednesday effective October 24th.
Tidwell said he will focus on his law practice and continue working and teaching in the field of  emergency medicine.
Tidwell is an 18-year veteran of the Piedmont police. He was named acting chief in 2007 and was appointed to the position by the City Council a year later. 
A 2005 graduate of the Birmingham School of Law, Tidwell has practiced law in Calhoun County since 2007. He has volunteered at the Piedmont Rescue Squad since 1996, and became a part-time employee in 2012. He began teaching in Gadsden State Community College Emergency Medical Services  program this year.
Longtime officer Sgt. Freddie Norton
has been named acting chief.

Mayor Billy Baker said the city will soon begin the process of hiring Tidwell’s replacement. Once a candidate has been selected, the City Council will take a vote to name the next chief
