Blue Bell Creameries voluntarily expanded its recall to
include all of its products, from ice cream to frozen yogurt to sherbet. There
is concern the frozen treats could be contaminated with listeria, a bacteria
that can cause severe illness and even death.
Two samples of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream tested
positive for the bacteria in March.
Alabama is one of 23 states included in the recall. The
products in question were distributed to convenience stores and supermarkets
across the state.
The Blue Bell plant in Sylacauga is still producing ice
cream in half gallon containers. The company however is changing policies at
all its plants as to the way it cleans equipment and tests its products.
Part of the fix is a new procedure called “test and hold.”
The plant in Sylacauga will be one of the plants implementing it. Products will be tested on a daily basis but
not sent out until the results confirm they are safe.
The chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream which tested positive
for listeria was made March 17th and March 27th.
If you bought that ice cream, you can return it to the store
for a full refund. Blue Bell says it expects to resume limited distributions
soon, once it's confident the product is safe
