Cherokee murder suspect moved to Etowah County Jail

Terry Lee McKinney

A Cherokee County man arrested last weekend for the murder and dismemberment of an as-yet-unidentified victim is now being held in the Etowah County Detention Center in Gadsden.  Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver said a Federal Bureau of Investigation K9 team arrived from Quantico, Va., on Saturday to help with a search for evidence in the case along Alabama Highway 273 and County Road 47. The Tucker’s Chapel Volunteer Fire Department assisted the team, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Major Crimes Task Force with the search.
The investigation began March 29 when someone reported discovering what appeared to be human remains along a roadside.
Investigators walked about 10 miles of roadside, recovering remains as they investigated the case.
63 year old Terry Lee McKinney,  was arrested and charged with murder. He initially was held in the Cherokee County Detention Center, but Shaver said he was transferred Saturday to the larger facility that can better accommodate McKinney’s special needs.
Authorities are investigating the theory that the deceased man may be a man who was reported missing in Cherokee County before the discovery of the human remains. However, Shaver said DNA testing will be required to identify the deceased. That could take weeks, as the investigation continues.
