Dismemberment murder suspect to have hearing in Etowah County

A court appearance has been scheduled for a Cherokee County man charged in the murder and dismemberment of a man last month in the Cedar Bluff area.
Ninth Circuit District Attorney Mike O’Dell said the hearing is expected to take place in Etowah County, where suspect 63 year old Terry Lee McKinney, is being held on a murder charge.
McKinney was arrested March 29, the same day Cherokee law enforcement personnel were contacted by individuals who found what appeared to be human remains on the side of County Road 82.
Appearances did not deceive; Cherokee County authorities searched the roadside and found more human remains in plastic bags. While the victim has not been positively identified, authorities looked at the possibility it was a Cedar Bluff man reported missing a few days earlier, and their probe led them to McKinney — believed to be the last to have seen the man.
Not long after his arrest, McKinney was transferred to the Etowah County Detention Center. Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver said the large facility was better able to accommodate McKinney’s medical needs. Shaver said McKinney, who is confined to a wheelchair, likely will require special travel arrangements whenever court proceedings take place, and his office will have to do what is necessary to bring him to court.
O’Dell said the Cherokee County Courthouse, like the jail, is not equipped to securely accommodate McKinney, which will make it necessary for a judge to travel to Etowah County for a court hearing in the case, slated for April 23.
