Jury selection is expected to begin today in Talladega
County in the murder trial of 22 year old Corry R. Averett, of Sylacauga. Averett is accused in the November 2004
murder of 26 year old Roscoe Desmond Anderson III. Anderson’s body was found in
the road in front of his residence on Marion Avenue in Sylacauga after
suffering several gunshot wounds. At the time, witnesses reported hearing
several shots and seeing two different vehicles driving off in different
directions. The Sylacauga Police Department investigation went on for nearly
five years before Averett was charged with murder. He was indicted by a grand
jury in August 2009 when Averett was in federal prison in Georgia for a weapons
violation.If convicted of murder with the use of a firearm, Averett faces 20 to
99 years or life in prison.
