A spring dance at a former school in turned into a crime
scene early Saturday when gunfire erupted at the Phyllis Wheatley Community
Center in Childersburg. One man was injured and several cars were hit by
gunfire. In Sylacauga, a man was arrested but no one was hurt after shots were
fired near a Spring Break carnival. Childersburg Police Investigator Donald
Elkins said he’s working to piece together what led to the gunfire at Wheatley
Center Saturday at 1:40 a.m. He said two calibers of handgun were fired, but
it’s not clear how many guns or how many shots were fired. Talladega County
deputies and Childersburg Police were on the scene within moments, and found
that several shots had been fired. 24
year old Cordei Rishawn Daniel, of, Harpersville, was shot once in the chest.
Daniel drove himself to Coosa Valley Medical Center and was later transferred
to UAB. Daniel was released from the hospital on Sunday. Persons of interest have been identified in
the case, but there have been no arrests. Anyone with information about the
case is asked to call the Childersburg Police Department at 256-378-5747. An
Alexander City man was arrested in the Sylacauga incident Saturday night. According to Sylacauga Police 22-year-old
Kevin Dewayne White Jr. was arrested following an altercation on Norton Avenue
during which he allegedly fired a gun into the air. The incident occurred
across the street from the carnival, which has become a Spring Break tradition
in the Sylacauga High School parking lot.
White was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit
and reckless endangerment. He was transported to Talladega County Jail. Bond
was set at $2,000, and White was placed on hold with his probation officer.
