Oxford police say
they have identified a hit-and-run suspect less than 24 hours after a
crash that killed a 47-year-old man Sunday.
According to Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown Ricky Lee Suddarth, was
struck by a vehicle on Barry Street in Oxford less than one mile from the
Anniston Metropolitan Airport. Brown
said a passerby reported the incident to police after finding Suddarth lying in
a ditch. He said first responders were on the scene by 10:15 p.m. Sunday
night. Oxford police Chief Bill
Partridge said investigators were able to obtain a description of the vehicle
from debris at the scene. Officers found
the suspect’s vehicle on east Seventh Street behind Somerset Place apartments.
The area Partridge described is about one mile from the scene of the
hit-and-run. The suspect, a 23-year-old
Anniston man, has not been identified by police. The incident remains under
investigation, Chief Partridge said, but he expects charges by the end of the week.
Partridge said it appears the suspect was texting while driving when the crash
occurred.
