A 23 year old Anniston woman has been arrested, charged with
three counts of chemical endangerment after the Aug. 10 death of her
4-month-old son, after police say autopsy results revealed methamphetamine in
his system.
Police on Aug. 10
responded to an emergency call at a home on Buggy Lane in Anniston and
found the boy not breathing. The child was pronounced dead that day, and
although no foul play was suspected, his body was sent for an autopsy, as is
standard procedure.
In early January, police the results of the autopsy and the
blood work of the infant showed methamphetamine in the bloodstream. “he mother
of the infant, Tyelyn Kay Sanders, eventually admitted to breastfeeding the
infant, which would explain the methamphetamine in the bloodstream.
Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown says that the child’s cause
of death was “pneumonia with the presence of methamphetamine.”
Two other children —
an 8-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy — were later removed from the home by the
Department of Human Resources after testing positive for methamphetamine.
Calhoun County District Attorney Brian McVeigh said that it
will be up to a grand jury to determine if Sanders could face additional
charges in connection with her child’s death.
