An Attalla man was assisted by other motorists on the
Interstate 759 bridge in Gadsden Monday afternoon after he accidentally
discharged a gun in his pocket, shooting himself in the leg.
Officers responded to find the 21-year-old man with a
self-inflicted gunshot wound lying on the ground beside his vehicle on the
bridge. Two people were doing chest compressions on the victim, who was
unresponsive.
A 15-year-old told police he and the victim were going down
the road when the victim accidentally pulled the trigger of the gun while it
was in his pocket. The bullet went through his left leg.
The juvenile said the victim told him to grab the steering
wheel because he was afraid he was going to pass out. He did pass out before
the vehicle stopped.
A Weaver man was first on the scene, according to the
report. He checked the victim for a pulse and didn’t find one, and found the
driver was not breathing. A Trussville man ran up and helped him get the driver
out of his vehicle. The Trussville man started doing CPR, and a woman also
stopped to assist.
Medics arrived and took over treatment of the man, who was
taken to a local hospital. He was listed in stable condition Tuesday.
