Joyce Hardin Garrard |
Prosecutors and defense lawyers say they're ready after
three years to begin the trial of an Alabama grandmother charged in the running
death of her 9-year-old granddaughter.
Etowah County Circuit Judge William Ogletree says attorneys
can begin qualifying hundreds of potential jurors Feb. 17 for the trial of
49-year-old Joyce Garrard.
Final jury selection starts about Feb. 23.
The judge laid out the schedule during a hearing Friday.
Prosecutors say Garrard killed Savannah Hardin in early 2012
by making her run for hours as punishment for a lie.
Garrard says she's innocent. She faces a possible death
sentence if convicted.
Court documents indicate that the judge must decide whether
jurors will be allowed to live at home during the trial or be sequestered in a
hotel.
