Grand jury to hear case of Anniston man shot by police

James Wine

A 60 year old Anniston man, who police say was shot by officers in December after he reportedly refused to drop a knife, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday in a Calhoun county courtoom.
James Wine, asked for and was appointed an attorney, Michael Askew, by Calhoun County District Judge Chris McIntyre.
Wine was shot by Anniston police Dec. 29, 2014, and was later charged with three counts of first-degree attempted assault on the officers.
Those officers first fired a stun gun at Wine, but that failed to stop him, and as he moved toward one of the officers he was shot in the abdomen. Wine then stabbed himself in the chest, and while trying to do so again was again hit with a stun gun and dropped his knife. Wine reached for his knife while officers approached him and officers fired a stun gun for a third time.
Wine was being held in the Calhoun County Jail on Monday. A grand jury is to later hear the case against Wine, and determine if he is to face those charges. Court records show his bond had been set at $15,000.
