Calhoun county jail inmate committs suicide

An inmate in the Calhoun County Jail killed himself by hanging Saturday.
49 year old William Jeffery Hopper,  of Eastaboga was discovered by other inmates, hanging by a bed sheet from a door hinge of his cell inside the C Block section of the jail at 12:32 p.m. Saturday afternoon, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.
“CPR was started by the jail officers and the nurse,” according to the release, but a deputy with the Calhoun County Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the jail.
Hopper was arrested on Jan. 16 by U.S. Marshals on parole violation warrants for two previous robbery charges, and he had outstanding warrants from other agencies for burglary charges.
Sheriff Larry Amerson said that Hopper was screened for possible suicidal tendencies, as is standard procedure for all inmates, And He gave no indication of a tendency for suicide or threat of suicide.
Amerson said The Etowah County Sheriff's Office is conducting an external investigation of the matter, and preliminary indications are that the death was the result of suicide.
