Ford files hazing suit against Birmingham Southern Fraternity

Former Westbrook Christian quarterback Jonathan Ford, Son of house minority leader Craig Ford of Gadsden is suing a Birmingham Southern fraternity chapter in Jefferson County Circuit Court, claiming he was injured during a hazing incident.
The lawsuit, states Ford was injured when bleach was sprayed into his eyes, forcing him to seek emergency medical care and leaving him unable to throw a football and fully participate in football practice.
Ford left the fraternity and the college at the end of the semester and now is enrolled in another school. The lawsuit names the Birmingham Southern chapter and the national chapter of the Kappa Alpha fraternity, along with Birmingham Southern, chapter President Alexander Campbell Cantrill and member Robert Mackenzie Weaver.
Ford signed a football scholarship with Birmingham Southern College in 2013 and enrolled in the college for the fall semester. He went out for rush and was recruited by and offered a bid to join the Phi Chapter of Kappa Alpha.
He accepted the invitation and became a pledge in the fraternity.
Soon after his pledgeship began, the lawsuit states that Ford was subjected to hazing by active members of the chapter.
During the fall semester, Ford was injured while cleaning a staircase in the fraternity house when defendant Weaver negligently caused bleach to spray in Ford’s eyes. The lawsuit contends the defendants were responsible for fraternity members’ behavior, including that of Weaver.
