Cheaha State Park officials unveiled a statue Saturday
honoring those men who helped make the facility what it is today.
The Alabama Legislature is currently facing a major budget
shortfall and if more money isn't found, many state parks could be closed,
including Cheaha.
But it won’t if those who viewed the statue unveiling
Saturday have anything to say about it.
The statue was the brainchild of Grant Atkinson, who raised
$5,000 of the $10,000 cost as part of his Eagle Scout service project. It's the
63rd corps statue erected in the United States to date.
Sen. Gerald Dial, R-Lineville attended the event and was
clear about his feelings regarding Cheaha’s closure saying “They're not going
to close my state park — I'd be willing
to pass some small taxes."
