A hearing to discuss Joyce Garrard's trial appea lset for
today has been delayed until July 24,
according to Etowah County Deputy District Attorney Marcus Reid.
The hearing was originally set for June 18. Reid said the defense
has asked for more time to prepare for the hearing.
The 50-year-old was recently convicted in her
granddaughter's 2012 death. Prosecutors say Garrard forced Savannah Hardin to
run for hours as a punishment for lying about eating a candy bar.
Garrard filed an appeal to her conviction and a request for
a new trial in May. Her attorneys contend that several rulings by the judge in
the case violated Garrard's rights. They also believe jurors disobeyed court
orders to avoid the news during the trial.
She is facing life without parole for Hardin's death.
