Officials say high profile trial expected to create parking issues at Etowah County Courthouse

Joyce Hardin Garrard

Etowah County officials expect a high-profile trial this month to create parking challenges around the courthouse and are advising anyone with business there to take care of it now or seek alternatives.
49 year old Joyce Hardin Garrard, is set to go on trial Feb. 23 for capital murder in the 2012 death of her granddaughter, 9 year old Savannah Hardin.
Prosecutors contend that Garrard forced her granddaughter to run for hours until she collapsed and subsequently which has generated national attention, and the trial is expected to do the same.
Jury selection is set to get underway next Tuesday and will run through Feb. 20, and the trial could last as long as three weeks.
Because of the attention the case has received, a much larger than usual jury pool will be called. There will be hundreds of additional people looking for parking spaces around the judicial building and courthouse during jury selection.
Revenue Commissioner Linda Barrett-Vaughan said February is the busiest month for tag renewals, and a busy month for paying property taxes.
Barrett-Vaughan said if people need to come into the courthouse, it would be far easier for them to do so before jury selection and the trial begin. She said it also would be better for them to pay taxes online or over the phone, or take care of vehicle registration at one of the county’s satellite offices or via mail.
