Etowah County CEO placed on indefinite adminstrative leave

Patrick Simms

The Etowah County Commission, in a called meeting Friday placed Patrick Simms, chief administrative officer for the Etowah County on an indefinite administrative leave without an explanation.
The commission called for an executive session to discuss the security of the courthouse and the security of the county's technology and computer systems.
After the commission reconvened from the executive session, the members voted to place Simms on leave.
They did not comment about the reason for the action.
The leave is active until further action by the commission.
Simms was hired as chief executive officer in 2006 after serving as administrator of the Chambers County Commission.
He also had served as general manager of the Huguley Water and Fire Protection Authority near Lanett.
Simms is originally from the Chambers County area and owns property there.
He remained at Etowah County about a year before he left to take a job in Talladega County.
After a short time, he was hired again in Etowah County as CEO and has remained in the position since then.
The commission voted last year to change the job title to chief administrative officer to better suit the duties of the position.
