Gadsden council approves sunday sales ordinance

Gadsden businesses are preparing for seven day a week alcohol sales, which could start as soon as this Sunday.
More than two-thirds of Gadsden voters supported Sunday sales in last month's election.  The seven council members unanimously passed Gadsden's new ordinance Tuesday morning.
It goes into effect as soon as its publication in The local newspaper and it is signed by the mayor.
Before the council voted on the ordinance, the members discussed what time to start sales.  The first draft was for alcohol to go on sale at noon on Sunday.  However, the city allows sales from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. every other day.  Councilman Robert Avery proposed an amendment to allow Sunday sales follow the same hours, to "try to make all hours consistent."
The council unanimously approved the amendment before passing the ordinance.
