A long-standing agreement to bus students from Etowah County
schools to Attalla City schools will end when school begins this fall. The
changes will take place over a three-year period.
The Etowah County Board of Education voted Thursday night to
end the agreement that has been in place for more than 38 years.
The transition is planned so students already enrolled at
Etowah High School can graduate from there.
Students at Highland, Duck Springs and Ivalee elementary
schools will be affected. Students from Highland will be transported to Gaston,
and Duck Springs students will be transported to Sardis.
An exact plan for Ivalee students has not been determined,
but they most likely will be transported to West End or Sardis, depending on
where they live. Ivalee, on Gallant Road just off Alabama Highway 77, is just a
few miles from the Attalla city limits.
Between 90 percent and 95 percent of Ivalee students
transfer to Attalla City schools.
Ivalee is 3.7 miles from Etowah High School in Attalla, 12
miles from Sardis High and 11.5 miles from West End High.
Parents of those students would have an option to continue
to send their child to Attalla City schools if Attalla agrees to accept them,
but there would be no bus transportation available through the county system.
