White Plains woman arrested on Manslaughter charges

Amelia Ruth Preston

A White Plains woman was arrested Wednesday charged with manslaughter after her boyfriend died from a gunshot wound.
Sheriff Larry Amerson said 34-year-old Amelia Ruth Preston and 49-year-old Jerry Shaw got in an argument early Wednesday morning at their home in White Plains.  Deputies responded to a 4:00 a.m. call about a shooting, and found Shaw dead in the front yard of the home on Red Road 55.
Amerson said The investigation showed that the victim and his girlfriend had been in some sort of dispute and struggle involving the firearm when it discharged one time striking him in the chest.
The sheriff said they were Apparently trying to get him outside to a vehicle to go to a hospital when he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation is ongoing and the sheriff said preliminary research did not show any previous emergency calls involving Preston or Shaw.  He said this appears to be the first time deputies responded to the home.
Amerson said It was clear that the circumstances could easily be described as reckless in causing the loss of life.
Preston remained in the Calhoun County jail Wednesday evening.  Bond is set at $20,000.
