Two overnight patrol officers made Heflin's largest drug
bust of the year on Interstate 20 Wednesday night.
A pair of Georgia men, 34-year-old Neville Anthony Davis and
30-year-old Andre Kareem Davy, are accused of possessing 21 pounds of marijuana
and running from officers. Their bonds
are set at $1,000,000 for marijuana trafficking and $6,000 for resisting
arrest.
The officers stopped Davis for erratic driving, particularly
failing to maintain his lane.
Investigators smelled a strong odor of marijuana and got
permission to search the vehicle. One
officer opened the trunk and found a suitcase containing 21 bags of hydroponic
marijuana. Each weighed a pound, and
police said the edges of bricks inside the bags is evidence they were cut off
of larger compressed blocks.
Police say Each one pound bag is worth about $2,000. When cut into $10 dime bags, the total value
of Wednesday night's seizure is well over $200,000.
Police got Davis out of the car and had him by the patrol
vehicle for questioning. Dash camera
video shows Davis running toward the driver's door of his vehicle. The officer said Davis intended to get back
in the car and drive away, but he chased the suspect around the front of the
car and into the woods.
The officer took Davis down with a taser as Davy escaped
into the woods. Investigators found Davy
a few hours later on the side of the highway.
