Rep. Wood to introduce liquor tax increase

Rep. Randy Wood

Legislation being sponsored by State Rep. Randy Wood of Saks
would levy a 5 percent tax on all liquor sold at Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control stores in Calhoun County, but would not apply to beer or wine sales. According to Calhoun County District Attorney Brian McVeigh, the money generated if the bill becomes law would help his office prosecute domestic violence cases, as well as help victims of that violence.
Wood says that under his bill,  the stores will collect the funding, and then send it to the County Commission.
The commission will then give the money to the district attorney’s office.
McVeigh said he approached Calhoun County’s legislative delegation and told the lawmakers his office needed help.
Wood will propose the bill when the Legislature meets the first Tuesday in March.
