Calhoun County investigators say a man shot his neighbor
twice after receiving a ride to a liquor store.
Deputies arrested 54-year-old Nickolas Alto Green in
Ohatchee Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators went to Mountain Road at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a
report of shots fired and a vehicle fire.
Sheriff Larry Amerson said Green lives in a camper on
Mountain Road, and went to his neighbor's house to ask for a ride to the
store. The 51-year-old man -- whom
investigators have not identified -- agreed.
Amerson said The victim said on the ride back that Green was
cursing and yelling at him, he didn't know why, and Green had consumed a great
deal of the alcohol they had purchased at the store. Investigators estimated Green drank about a
half-quart of bourbon.
When the men got back, the neighbor went back into his house
to talk with a friend who was visiting. They heard noise outside, and when they
looked out the window, they saw Green pour gasoline on the Ford Ranger pick-up
truck and set it on fire.
The victim went outside and confronted Mr. Green to see why
his truck was on fire, and at that point, Green pulls out a .38 caliber
revolver and shoots the victim twice.
Shots struck the man in the arm and in the abdomen. LifeFlight paramedics took the man by
helicopter to Birmingham, where he continued to receive treatment late
Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect has been charged with attempted murder, and for
either criminal mischief or arson of a vehicle, investigators will be
consulting with the district attorney's office to see which charge is more
appropriate.
Amerson said the victim's friend who witnessed the fire and
shooting told deputies he saw no reason for Green to become violent.
