Heflin police have captured 43 year old Shannon Myers,
accused of assaulting two officers early Friday morning, following a 12 hour manhunt Friday.
Chief A.J. Benefield said 43-year-old Shannon Myers and his
girlfriend Cassie Malin got in an altercation with a pair of officers at the BP
gas station at I-20 exit 205. Malin was
arrested at the scene. Myers fled and
was considered armed and dangerous. Investigators said he recently got out of
prison in South Carolina after serving time for his role in a 2003 murder.
Benefield said police responded to the service station
around 1 a.m. when the suspects got in an argument with the clerk.
Investigators said
Malin jumped in the back of the car and one of the officers made contact with her. Benefield said Myers also tried to get in the
car and drive off, but the officers stopped him. The chief said the suspects then assaulted
the police.
She bit the officers multiple times. At that point there was a knife in center
console, she was trying to get to her knife to use it. She ended up hitting him in the nose with
something, either her elbow or picking something up and hitting him.
Another officer was over trying to subdue Myers and the
female kicked the door and hit Bonner upside the head. An officer ended up tazing Myers]while he
was trying to get away and then [Myers] turned around and took off again.
Benefield said that officer used the Taser on Myers a second
time, but had to stop when the other officer called for a medic after suffering
a significant cut to his forearm. The
officers were able to take Malin into custody, but Myers escaped.
The Cleburne County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Marshal Service,
Alabama State Troopers, and Georgia State Patrol assisted in the manhunt for
Myers.
