Funeral service set for Gadsden Medal Of Honor Recipient

Funeral arrangements have been announced for gadsden Medal of Honor recipient Col. Ola Lee Mize, who died Wednesday.  Mize, who served in both Korea and Vietnam, was a native of Marshall County and resident of Gadsden. He received the medal "for conspicuous gallantry and outstanding courage above and beyond the call of duty" in September 1954 for his actions on June 10, 1953 near Outpost Harry (Surang-ni, Korea) during an intense attack.  Visitation for Mize will be from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at Southside Baptist Church, 3975 Alabama 77, in Southside. The funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Southside Baptist, and a funeral procession will begin at 10:30 a.m. to carry the body to Crestwood Cemetery.  The funeral will be conducted with full military honors by the U.S. Army 5th Special Forces Group, deployed from Fort Campbell, Ky., with a 21-gun salute. An Alabama National Guard unit will be responsible for the flag Honor Guard.
