Rainbow City couple victims of adoption fraud

A judge sentenced an Arkansas woman this week for using adoption to defraud a Rainbow City family. Alison and Paul Roberts  thought their dreams of another baby had come true when, through an attorney, they matched for adoption with a pregnant woman in Arkansas. Their six-year-old son Wilson could not wait to be a big brother.  Through their lawyer, the Roberts sent thousands of dollars to the birth mother, Molita Elcar, to pay for pregnancy-related expenses. The entire time, another family was doing the same. The Roberts didn't learn about the other family until they were on their way to Arkansas for the birth. In a hotel room in Memphis, Tenn., their attorney called to tell them Elcar had given birth and the baby went to another family. This week a judge in Arkansas sentenced Elcar to 30 days in jail and ordered her to pay $10,000 restitution for defrauding the Roberts. The family said this is not about the money; it's about the baby girl. The couple said they'll try adoption again.
