A Talladega man has been charged with felony assault and
escape in the third degree, as well as several misdemeanor charges, following
an incident in the Mapco parking lot on Alabama 77 Friday evening.
According to Talladega Police , 27 year
old
Damien Jovaughn Curry, is being held
on a $20,000 bond set by Circuit Judge Bo Hollingsworth.
Curry was first observed by officers
responding to a disturbance call. Curry was on the trespass list for the Mapco
station, and apparently had a crack pipe underneath his hat. He was handcuffed
and taken into custody.
Curry said a
female had given him the pipe to hold, and she had the actual drugs. Officers
were questioning the female when Curry managed to escape from the back of the
patrol car and run off toward Wren Manor across the street, while still
handcuffed.
Officers gave chase, and one
of them was struck in the knee, head and chest with the handcuffs. Another
officer injured his hand while taking Curry down.
Both officers were transported to the
emergency room at Citizens Baptist Medical Center, where they were treated and
released.
Curry was charged with
criminal trespass, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana in
the second degree, escape in the third degree and assault in the second degree
against a police officer.
