Complaints about prostitution in the East Gadsden area has
led The Gadsden Police Department’s Special Projects Team to make a number of
arrests. An operation Friday on the west
side of Gadsden that resulted in 10 arrests for solicitation of prostitution
was spurred by women complaining that men were approaching them as they walked
to work, asking to buy sex. An officer
with the Special Projects Team said authorities had not been aware of the
problem, but quickly found out the scenario the women described was
accurate. On Friday, the team worked
with a female officer who was walking on
Forrest Avenue, beginning at about 11 a.m. She was on the street an
estimated three hours, allowing for the time it would take to process someone
after an arrest. The men arrested ranged
in age from 19 to 71. There were five white men arrested, three black men and
two Hispanic men. One of them had just
gotten out of prison the day before.
