While Gadsden voters prepare to head to the polls tuesday to
vote for mayor and city council members,
they will also be deciding wheather or not Sunday alcohol sales will be
allowed in the city. Supporters of
Sunday alcohol sales say approval in
Tuesday’s referendum will help the local economy and bring in jobs and new
businesses. Lesa Osborn, director of the Gadsden Commercial Development
Authority, said two national chain
restaurants “are waiting to hear the referendum results” Osborn said the restaurants, which she could
not identify, likely would come here if they can reach an agreement with
property owners and seven-day alcohol sales are approved. The Chamber of Gadsden & Etowah County
has been pushing for a referendum on the issue since 2012. Some religious leaders have opposed the
sunday sales. Polls will be open tuesday
from 7am until 7pm.
