Attorney General warns of Jury Scam

Attorney General Luther Strange

Attorney General Luther Strange is warning Alabamians of a scam involving callers demanding payment for missed jury duty.
Strange said scammers in several areas of the state have been calling victims and threatening to arrest them for missing jury duty. Strange said suspects then tell the victims, who were typically elderly, that they can avoid jail time by purchasing a prepaid credit card and paying a fake bond over the phone.
Strange said the calls are being placed from prepaid cellphones with local numbers. The attorney general said this scam has been reported in Autauga, Butler, Coffee, Colbert, Covington, Etowah, Houston, Morgan, Mobile and Tuscaloosa counties.
Strange said Alabamians who miss jury duty are typically contacted in writing and are asked to call local clerk’s offices.
