The Piedmont City Council on
Tuesday decided to get the ball for another attempt for Sunday alcohol sales. The council petitioned local
lawmakers last year for Sunday sales
Three men who own separate businesses that sell alcohol were at Tuesdays
meeting to support Sunday sales. The three businessmen said Piedmont stands to
collect more tax revenue if Sunday sales are legalized. The men also said that
Piedmont misses out on revenue from alcohol sales on the weekend because people
buy it in other cities. Mayor Billy
Baker said the council will vote at its next meeting about whether or not it
wants to make the formal request to lawmakers for Sunday sales. The Tuesday
vote simply authorized city workers to draft that formal resolution.
, but the measure failed to gain support
in the Legislature, which must sign off on any locality’s desire to start to
sell alcohol on Sundays. At Tuesday’s meeting, the council voted to let city
workers draft a resolution for a formal appeal by the city to state lawmakers
for their support of a bill for Sunday sales.
